There are many types of switch. Note that these pictures are not circuit diagrams. There is no way of specifying which switch to use for a circuit. It comes down to common sense. A toggle switch is a generic class of electric switch that uses a mechanical lever, handle or rocking mechanism to actuate it.

A lever moved up and down from base point to open or close an electric circuit. These are either on/off, or are biased, so they spring back into place after being released.
